"Traveling by Train to the Fortress Again"

As part of the program for celebration of European Heritage Days 2024, 120 students from the “Branko Božović” Elementary School travelled by train to Nikšić, where a public class titled “Cultural Heritage and Tourism as Bridges of Peace” was held at the Fortress.

This event, made possible by the collaboration with Željeznički Prevoz Crne Gore, allowed the students to travel for free by train from Podgorica to Nikšić. This public class marked the conclusion of this year’s edition of European Heritage Days and the celebration of World Tourism Day.

From September 23 to October 1, under the theme “Heritage that Connects – Cultural Networks and Routes,” volunteer actions to clean up walking paths and remove overgrowth from the fortress were organized. Weekend concerts featuring local musicians were held on the small stage of the fortress’s summer theatre. Around 400 visitors from various countries, including the USA, the UK, Hong Kong, Hawaii, Chile, Russia, France, Poland, Czechia, Slovakia, Denmark, Israel, Turkey, Germany, Australia, China, and cities from the region, along with our local community, enjoyed an unforgettable experience. Guests had the chance to explore the fortress, taste local specialties and Nikšićko beer, and learn historical stories and legends tied to the ancient walls. In direct conversations with international visitors, we promoted Nikšić and shared information about our candidacy for the 2030 European Capital of Culture. We also introduced the Bedem Fest, which led to a significant increase in international followers on our social media platforms," said Petar Šundić.

The program was rounded off with a visit from the students of “Branko Božović” as part of the ongoing collaboration with ŽPCG’s initiative "Traveling by Train Again". This initiative connects cultural heritage with the Podgorica–Nikšić–Podgorica railway route, which passes by numerous historical landmarks. The students had the opportunity to learn about the history and construction of the fortress during the public class and, through their train journey, gain insight into the significance of railways and the importance of choosing train travel as the most environmentally friendly mode of transport.

“Over the course of nine days, a beautiful image of Nikšić’s fortress was sent out into the world. Visitors were left full of impressions and enthusiasm, not only for the fortress itself but also for our warm hospitality. Almost all of them promised that when they return home, they will recommend visiting Nikšić and the fortress so that others may experience its charm and the authentic spirit of Nikšić,” concluded Petar Šundić.
